The Shadow of the Shadow

A young woman opens her eyes in the Real World for the first time, and nothing about it feels safe. She is afraid to step outside and afraid to fall asleep, because each time she does, she is confronted with what the film calls her meta unconsciousness, a shadow realm where the fears and desires she cannot face in waking life take shape. Directed by Béatrice Steimer and starring Paula Luna and Thea Steimer, this German short is an experimental, dreamlike drama that treats identity as a series of nested selves, each casting a shadow over the next. Sparse in dialogue and rich in atmosphere, it asks what it means to arrive in one's own life and how much courage it takes to keep going when the boundary between dream and reality refuses to hold still.
