The Night That Holds You

A summer has passed, but Valerie cannot stop living in the last one. Her lover Suzanne vanished without explanation, and memories of her keep surfacing, vivid enough to crowd out the present. New Zealand director Steven Chow shapes this twelve-minute romantic drama around that haunting, moving fluidly between what was and what is as Valerie (Claire Van Beek) tries to hold on to a woman (Julia Hyde) who exists now only in recollection. Dreamlike and intimate, the film is less concerned with solving a disappearance than with rendering the texture of longing itself: the places, sensations and half-remembered conversations that keep a lost love alive. The Night That Holds You is a mood piece about obsession, grief and the difficulty of letting the past release its grip.
