Taxidermia

György Pálfi's Taxidermia tells the stories of three generations of Hungarian men: a lonely, frustrated soldier consumed by his fantasies during the Second World War; his son, an enormous Communist-era champion speed eater competing for national glory; and the grandson, a gaunt, obsessive taxidermist who is trying to build a machine that will let him embalm himself. Spanning half a century, the film satirically mocks Hungary's struggles as it passes from imperial servitude through Soviet authority to independent lethargy, with each generation's appetite reflecting the era that produced it. Grotesque, darkly funny, and visually astonishing, Taxidermia was Hungary's entry for the Academy Awards and remains one of the boldest films of the twenty-first century.
