Potato Dreams of America

An autobiographical comedy about a boy growing up in the collapsing Soviet Union, his mail-order-bride mother, and their escape to Seattle in the 1990s. Young Potato dreams of America through bootleg Hollywood movies while his mother, a doctor with no patience for the system, plots their way out by answering an ad for American husbands. What they find on the other side of the world is stranger and more complicated than any movie: a devout new stepfather, a culture that makes no sense, and a teenage son slowly realizing he is gay in a house where that cannot be said. Told in two distinct visual styles, Wes Hurley's Potato Dreams of America is an immigrant's take on the American Dream, proving that life is often stranger than fiction.
