Into the Storm

Pol and Lucas have come to the north of Spain on holiday, and on the surface it looks like any couple's getaway: they dance, they drink, they laugh too loudly and argue just as loudly. Beneath the surface something has shifted, and the trip becomes an inventory of everything the two men have stopped saying to each other. Jesús Díaz Morcillo, who directs and stars opposite Patrick Martino, builds this fourteen-minute Spanish short as an intimate portrait of a relationship in its final stretch, less interested in a single dramatic rupture than in the slow accumulation of silences that precedes one. The coastal landscape, alternately bright and brooding, mirrors the mood inside the rented rooms. By the end, the words left unspoken weigh more than anything said, and the storm of the title is as much emotional as meteorological.
