Hot Gay Comics
Taped before a live audience at the New York comedy club Comix, Hot Gay Comics showcases the best in out and proud stand-up. Brooklyn-born comedian Dave Rubin hosts each episode, warming up the room before handing the microphone to a rotating lineup of gay and lesbian comics, among them Anne Neczypor, Mike Singer and Shawn Hollenbach. The material ranges across dating, family, work and the everyday absurdities of queer life, delivered with the confidence of performers who have been honing their sets on the club circuit for years. Directed by Michael Eldridge, the series ran for eight episodes and offers a snapshot of New York's gay comedy scene in the late 2000s, a time when out comics were still a rarity on television. The mix of sharp writing and easy crowd rapport makes it as welcoming to straight audiences as to the community it celebrates.
